Okay, this was a comedy of errors on my part... First the flash battery was dead, then the remote trigger was dead, then it was raining. So, we went old school - long extension cords, studio strobes and sync cables on the front lawn. It needed a bit more fine-tuning, but we did get a few pics at least, so that's something. Thanks to Becky for being super-patient with me screwing up.
